The Brief
A ten-minute documentary exploring the history and design of social media logos, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and YouTube, built around one central question: how big an impact do logos actually have on the advertising world?
The Process
I treated this like real journalism, not just a college exercise. I researched each platform's founder and the story behind their logo's evolution, then interviewed two people with genuinely different perspectives, one with an advertising background, one from graphic design, deliberately separate conversations so I could bring two distinct viewpoints together rather than one flattened take. I broke the documentary into clear sections: an introduction to why logos matter, a history of each platform's design evolution, how technology has changed what a logo needs to do, profiles of the actual people behind the icons, and a breakdown of the real techniques involved, colour, shape, typography, and tagline. I even designed and explained my own logo attempt as part of it, walking through the actual process rather than just talking about other people's work.
I thought carefully about audience too, not just one age group, but a range, simpler explanations for older viewers, more visual energy for younger ones, built around the honest goal of teaching something, not just holding attention.
The Outcome
A finished ten-minute documentary built on real interviews and real research, not just narration over stock footage, and a genuine answer to the question I set out to ask, that logos carry far more weight in how a brand is trusted and remembered than most people give them credit for.
